MEDIATHEQUE

Year: 2013

Project: Master Project

Urbanism/ Architecture/ Installation

Partners: Public Building (TU Delft)

The urban fabric of the location consists out of different levels which gradually connected the old city to the harbour of Marseille. This urban rhythm is disturbed by the interventions with the Mediatheque. A new equilibrium is found through a play of platforms, which are delicate positioned into the existing urban fabric. This rhythmic play will lead to a new vitality with new associations, (inter)connections and developments which can be experienced from the perspective of the individual but also from the universal one.

The Mediatheque is a minimalistic (naked) public structure in which the visitor can wonder in search for information while it gains new physical and digital experiences. The big ‘Bookshelves’ and the internal street offer guidance in this ‘forrest’ of possibilities. Visitors can borrow their books here and spread out over the building to find a personal spot to read.

This, mostly open, public installation creates a game of contradictions, which represent the state of Marseilles multicultural society. Seen from the outside the total structure operates as one big decor, in which the visitor becomes actors, who are constantly in motion. From the inside there is a game of watching and being watched going on, similar principles as at the staircases of the Opera in Paris. The elegant installation, structured by minimalistic architectural components, protrudes sharply with the surrounding monumental buildings.
