‘The House of Democracy and Law’ is an educational machine which reflects the humanistic ideal of the makeable society. A didactic constructed route symbolizes the road to democracy (an historic perspective). The route is designed as an upwards folded corridor, from which visitors have a constantly changing experience of the building and its surroundings. The route finishes in the democratic cafe positioned in ‘Purple Hat’, which gives a sense of control and overview of the building.
The monumental and sculptural ‘Purple Hat’ expresses the robust foundation of the Dutch democracy within our society. The trainings centre for both professionals as citizens is located within. Participants are trained in obtaining the proper skill set to become active citizens, who could participate in the public debate.
Freedom of speech and the public debate are fundamental for the Democracy. The Debate Centre is therefore positioned in the center of the building, completing the composition. This transparent (open) hall with lodges is the spatial reflection of this freedom and is flexible composed, to meet the dynamic programmatic demands. For example, it needs to fulfill the capacity to organize big public events such as election debates.
